Tourists in France who like to avoid tan lines by bathing topless now risk being fined for public indecency.
Cavaillon, a town in Provence, was the first town to implement a ban on bare chests, which has more recently occurred in Perpignan near the Spanish border. The ban is not a rarity in France, with holiday goers in Cote D’Azur and Cannes being told to cover up especially when away from the beach.
The ban continues a trend that sees beaches like those in St Tropez with a decline of women choosing to bathe topless, indicating that it is going out of style. Fashion line Eres has seen an increase in the sale of one-piece swimsuits.
The decline has been attributed to health-concerns and a desire to enforce feminist issues. Those caught with bare chests can face a fine of 38 Euros.
France has recently been in the news for implementing a ban on Muslim women wearing a burqa.
