The province of Valencia occupies part of the eastern side of Spain, stretching from the mountainous Sistema Iberico area in the north to the drier area in the south. The province has some of Spain’s best beaches, such as La Garrofera, inside La Albufera nature reserve; Pinedo, in the mouth of the beautiful river Turia; and La Malvarossa, located within the city of Valencia itself. So if you are looking for a beach holiday, this is one of the best places to visit in Spain.
Those looking for arts and culture and history during their holiday will be spoilt for choice. Valencia as a region is famous for its rich heritage and fine food. Paella is one of the most famous Valencian dishes, and other delights you can enjoy include drinks like mistela (a fortified wine) and the world-renowned horchata. The region also serves up a range of lovely desserts, like turron/torro, a soft nougat made and consumed throughout Spain and the Hispanic world during Christmas. The beautiful city of Valencia itself is a great place to sample some of the region’s culinary wonders, and you can also visit the city’s array of fascinating museums.
The region has excellent air, road and rail links to the rest of Spain and to Europe. If you are travelling to Valencia by air, you will fly in to the tourist-focused Alicante Airport, or to the more business-oriented Valencia Airport. A new airport has been built in the north of the region, although it is still to be opened; and both Valencia and Alicante airports are being expanded to provide more capacity for the increasing number of travellers flocking to this wonderful region.
Valencia as a region is far from homogenous: you will find a wide variety of historic sites and cultural attractions to suit you, depending on which of the region’s distinct comarques you visit. Valencia’s famous festivals and vibrant cultural life are one of its biggest selling points: it is well worth visiting the region during the ‘Las Fallas’ celebrations on the 19th of March every year. These celebrations typically see groups of local people parading ‘fallas’ (giant monuments made of wood and cardboard and often filled with fireworks) through the streets, and eventually burning the fallas at the climax of the festival, La Crema.
