Procida Holiday & Travel Guide

A charming island in the Gulf of Naples that like Ischia came to existence due to a volcanic eruption. It has the typical characteristics of a coastal area with beaches, marinas and waters of a saturated blue. The port of Marina Grande is a picturesque area with lovely pastel shaded houses. Corricella is another area of interest, starting off as a volcanic crater to develop into a fishing port. The area sees fewer tourists compared to Ischia and Capri, something that is welcomed by the residents here, which is great if you’re looking for a place that that is less crowded and hasn’t completely transformed to cater to tourists.

Procida is associated with the small island of Vivara. Where there was once a cliff there is now a 300 metre foot bridge as a means to connect the two islands starting from the Chiaiolella area in Procida. It is a completely deserted island with no inhabitants, with an area of around 3 square kilometres. There are several trails here characterised by wild plants, vegetation and animals including rare species of flowers and small animals such as rabbits and birds. The surrounding waters also contain rare species of fish and underwater plants and animals and the area is a protected reserve.

Procida is a popular choice for on-location filming, for example the film The Talented Mr Ripley. It is also used as a setting in famous novels such as L'isola di Arturo. Traditions and festivals to look out for include the procession that occurs the week before Good Friday, a tradition that goes back to 1627. There is also an annual literary awards ceremony and the customary election of the Graziella, as a nod to the novel by Alphonse de Lamartine.
