Rome is an extremely popular holiday destination. It is the city of the Roman Empire and therefore represents a significant time in history. It is often described as an open-air museum, which should give you some idea of what it has to offer when it comes to history and culture. It is also a popular choice for honey-mooning couples, is renowned for its cuisine and cafes and famous for its high fashion. Rome is a place rich in history within a modern metropolitan atmosphere and it’s no wonder tourists flock here.
Famous artists are associated with Rome such as Michelangelo, who although was originally from Tuscany, painted and sculpted famous pieces to decorate religious architecture, such as The Last Judgement located behind the Sistine Chapel. There are several tourist trails that ensure you will see the main sights however, it is urged that you do some independent exploring to get a truly authentic experience. World famous sights and areas here include the Colosseum, Roman Pantheon, Baths of Caracalla, St Peter’s Square, Vatican City, Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.
There are numerous options when travelling around the city. The traffic in Rome is chaotic and drivers are impatient so alternative modes of transport are strongly advised. Once you’re in the city it’s probably best to explore by foot which allows you to thoroughly explore the area. Public transport is run by ATAC, which covers buses, trams and the metro (underground). Tickets must be purchased before boarding.
Rome is a perfect place to go for those who like city breaks and historical and cultural holidays. Because of its popularity, tourists are often targeted by pickpockets so always be well aware of your belongings. Don’t let this put you off though, between its historical monuments, museums, timeless art pieces, restaurants and cafes Rome is a truly amazing place to visit.
