Lazio, or Latium as it was once called, is an Italian region located on the Western coast. It is broken down into five provinces including: Frosinone, Latina, Rieti, Viterbo and of course Rome, it is the province in which the capital city of Italy, Rome, is located.
The main towns here which attract a large number of tourists are Rome and Viterbo. Tivoli and Frascati are also popular spots. Lazio’s history goes back to the Etrcuscan and Roman era and it is a region full of archaeological remains, ancient ruins and monuments, so is perfect for those looking for historical or cultural holidays. The hustle and bustle of modern and touristy Rome contrasts surrounding areas of landscape countryside and historic and traditional towns. Other notable towns include Tivoli, Latina, Fiumicino and Guidonia Montecelio.
Pasta is a strong element of the cuisine in Lazio, with guanciale a key ingredient in its pasta alla carbonara and pasta all'amatriciana. Rigatoni alla Pajata is a classic Roman pasta dish, with a thick and creamy cheese-like sauce. There is a Jewish influence in the cooking here since Jewish people occupied Rome in the 1st Century, and there continues to be a large Jewish population there. Vegetables and artichokes are also a common component of the meals here. Street vendors known as friggitori are a common sight, serving up fried and battered mozzarella, artichoke and codfish. Pizzelle is an Italian waffle very similar to American waffles. The mixture for pizzelle is poured into a waffle iron and often flavoured with vanilla, anise, or lemon zest. Other traditional sweet snacks include cannoli and traditional Italian cookies. For drinks, the vineyards of South Rome produce some particularly fine wines, including Colli Lanuvini, Colli Albani and Castelli Romani, wines to come from the Roman hills.
Weather
The weather here is generally mild, however, the climate varies from area to area; coastal areas tend to be more humid, while mountains and inland areas see more rainfall. Temperatures during the summer months can reach highs of 30°C.

Transport
Rome Fiumicino and Rome Ciampino are the main airports in Lazio. Public transport is generally very reliable here to reach the tourist attractions. It is managed by ATAC and includes the Metro underground system. There is also a tram service.
