Pays de la Loire holiday & travel guide: Pays de la Loire (also known as Western Loire) is located on the west coast of France, under the region of Brittany, along the Bay of Biscay. The region has a beautiful landscape, with lush green country side surrounding the River Loire and the around 300 km of long sandy beaches along the coastline.There are also two small islands off the coast called Noirmoutier and the Ile d'Yeu, which are beautiful and unspoilt.
The departments inside the region are; Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, Sarthe, Vendée, and Mayenne. The capital of Pays de la Loire is Nantes, located in Loire Atlantique.
There are many different activities on offer in the region, with the rugged coastline giving perfect conditions for water sports and exploring nature and the inland areas attract walkers and cyclists due to the flat and beautiful landscapes. For wine lovers, this is a perfect location, with an abundance of different wines on offer; you will be spoilt for choice. The region is also home to many beautiful Chateaux and historical sites to visit.
Pays de la Loire was created in the late 20th Century, as a region to house the Capital City of Nantes, which was previously the capital of the Brittany Region. The area was highly popular for the wealthy and is now home to many beautiful Chateaux and castles to be explored.
Pays de la Loire has some fantastic cuisine, beautifully accompanied with a glass or two of locally produced wine. Seafood is commonly used in the local dishes, including mussels, oysters, sardines and anchovies. Due to the large agricultural industry, many dishes include creamy sauces and some famous cheeses such as, Port Salut. The area of Vendee is where the famous sweet bread, Brioche originated.
There are also many wines made in the region, including Muscadet, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Cabernet Franc. Also, the region creates a number of different ciders and is where the famous liquor Cointreau is made.
