St Crepin De Richemont is a small village in northern Dordogne, situated just a few km from the lovely town of Brantome. With many historic sites within easy reach, it is great base to discover the area.
PLACES TO VISIT:
Brantome. 10 km. Idyllic village on the banks of the River Dronne, known locally as the Venice of Perigord. Boasting a beautiful Benedictine abbey and a fabulous troglodyte cave with scenes of the Last Judgement carved in the stone make it well worth a detour.
St Jean de Cole. 25 km. Attractive village with a stone bridge over the river, and a well preserved old centre with castle, covered market and church.
Thiviers. 30 km. 'Capital of the foie gras in Green Perigord', the old part of the town holds the most interest for visitors including devilish carvings on the church columns! The town also has an important history of producing pottery.
Périgueux. 40 km. Capital city of the Dordogne department, set on the banks of the River Isle. The city boasts a beautiful medieval centre as well as a smaller but nonetheless fascinating roman quarter.
THINGS TO DO:
Grottes de Villars. 18 km. Natural prehistoric cave discovered in 1953 and boasting rock paintings dating back to 17,000 years ago. A spectacular sound and light show depicts the stages in the formation of the cave.
Golf Public de Périgueux, Marsac sur l?Isle. 35 km. Golf course. 18 holes ? 6028m par 72. On the banks of River Isle, a fairly flat and technical course with many water hazards.
Château de Hautefort. 60 km. Very elegant château with many interesting 17th century paintings and tapestries. Built on a stunning rocky promontory, it is one of the most remarkable châteaux in the Dordogne region.
L'Appel de la Forêt, Thénon. 60 km. Tree top adventure park. 9 progressive trails with over 100 activities. Swing, crawl and climb through the trees or slide down one of the 25 zip lines. An unforgettable moment to share with family or friends.
FURTHER AFIELD:
Excideuil. 45 km. Historical little town with gothic church and 16th century houses, originally developed around a 10th century monastery and overlooked by its castle. Its Thursday market should not be missed.
Aubeterre sur Dronne. 45 km. Classified as one of the prettiest villages in France, this village, full of rustic charm with steep cobbled streets overlooks the Dronne, is built in the shape of an amphitheatre on a white cliff. Its monolithic church is one of the most beautiful and unusual churches in the world. Dating from the 12th century, it is carved into a chalk cliff and is the largest underground church in France.
Terrasson. 85 km. Attractive town on the banks of the Vézère river and renowned for its stunning "Jardins de l'Imaginaire", award winning gardens planted on a steep hill.
Les Eyzies. 85 km. Home to the world?s most beautiful caves, some with outstanding crystallisations as well as stunning cliffs and rock formations. Cromagnon man was discovered here at the end of the 19th century. Nearby Fond de Gaume is one of the last prehistoric cave-painting sites that is still open to the public. The National Prehistory Museum which houses one of the world?s most complete collections of prehistoric artifacts is also found in Les Eyzies.
