Come and stay in Whitstable, on the beautiful north Kent coast, and you will have the chance to experience one of England’s most delightful seaside towns. Whitstable offers romance and history by the bucketload, with narrow streets and alleys with delightful names like ‘Squeeze Gut Alley’. If you are looking for a holiday experience a little different from other, larger seaside towns in the UK, then this is the right place for you.
What about local produce? What can you expect to eat when you stay here? Melton Mowbray has pork pies, Cromer has its crabs, and Whitstable has oysters. These are best sampled at the Wheelers Oyster Bar, where you can enjoy half a dozen oysters for under £5, or at the annual Whitstable Oyster Festival (which is usually in the last weekend of July).
Whitstable has an excellent arts scene, with lots for culture vultures to enjoy. You can take a look at some superb landscape photography at the Loupe Gallery and other venues on Harbour Street, and take in the best of live music at some of the town’s welcoming, friendly pubs, such as the famous Old Neptune pub. If you are looking for historic sites to visit, then you should take a trip to the fine Whitstable Castle, formerly Whitstable’s Manor House and built in the 1790s.
Whitstable’s famous beaches are mainly made up of pebble slopes, divided by traditional large wooden breaks or ‘groins’ in a style which you can also see at Eastbourne, Hastings and other beaches on the south coast of England. Whitstable’s beaches are a wonderful place to watch the sun go down, with the wooden-clad houses bathed in evening sunlight. The beaches are also beautiful in winter, so don’t be put off from visiting Whitstable outside the summer season.
Golfers will be right at home here, with the nearby Whitstable and Seasalter Golf Club offering 9 challenging holes to test novice and experienced golfers alike. The course is just 6 miles north of historic Canterbury. The Open Championship at Royal St. George's, just 20 miles away, tees off this week (14th July to 17th July).
