Como is a city located in the region of Lombardy, in the province named after it. Geographical features close by include the Lake Como and the Alps which create a natural landscape. Como is the best town to be located in to further explore the famous lake which flows northwards.
The city has numerous museums (such as the Museo della Seta), art galleries, theatres and gardens, which makes it an ideal destination for those looking for a cultural holiday. Lake Como especially is a popular filming location and numerous celebrities including George Clooney and Madonna have purchased properties here.
Other attractions here include the religious architecture, with a large selection of churches and cathedrals. The Duomo here is an awe-inspiring sight and well worth checking out, as is the Basilica di San Fedele, which dates back to the 10th Century. The villas are also popular with visitors, for example the Villa Olmo which dates back to the 18th century, and is a place where nobles went to stay in the summer, including the likes of Napoleon, Giuseppe Garibaldi and Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The centro storico (old town) is a great place to experience an authentic way of life in Italy, with a selection of cafes and shops in the little squares.
To sample the local cuisine, try the Polenta, a golden-yellow porridge-like dish of Italian cornmeal served as a side to meat, fish and cheese. Another popular dish is the risotto with perch fillets, a tasty dish with white wine, onions and butter to flavour it.
Como is one of the few places in Europe that has a sub-tropical climate, which means summers can get very hot. It’s best to visit the areas in spring and autumn to enjoy the sites in a comfortable climate. The transport links in Como are excellent, and getting to Milan or crossing the border to Switzerland is easy.
