Cilento is an area in Campania, part of the province of Salerno. It is a great natural site and includes the Cilento and Valle di Diano National Park, a World Heritage Site. It has a coastal area located by the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the towns here are examples of medieval hamlets, located by the stunning sea and characterised by cliffs and grottos which enhance its strong natural environment.
It contains geographical features such as the Alburni Mountains and the Vallo di Diano (a beautiful valley). Other scenic sites and points of interest that attract tourists here are: Cape Palinuro, Santa Maria di Castellabat, the Greek-Roman city of Paestum with lots of ancient ruins, Licosa Island in Castellabate and the old town in Romagnano set in the middle of the mountains providing a beautiful backdrop.
The town’s variety of beaches, mountains and seaside means there are a lot of activity choices for you here, from trekking and horse-riding in the mountains, to diving and boat trips to explore and view the stunning natural features of the sea.
The Cilento diet is famous for its variation. Local culinary delights to come from this area are its buffalo mozzarella and the white figs covered in chocolate. Cilento also has a large area of olive and chestnut groves to come from Italy, which means the olive oil from here is of the highest quality. The pasta and gnocchi dishes here are all the more tasty as they are homemade, and the lack of artificial or processed ingredients (all the fruits and vegetables are locally sourced and the meat is traditionally reared) results in high quality food.
Popular towns here are: Agropoli, Sapri, Capaccio, Centola, San Giovanni a Piro and Santa Marin.
