The Cote d’Azur runs from Menton on the Italian border in the east, to St Tropez in the west. It is home to a number of renowned areas including; Nice, Canes, Marseille and is within close proximity to Monaco. The Cote d’Azur has a beautiful Mediterranean climate, with over 300 days of sunshine a year and temperatures reaching up to 70°F.
The Cote d’Azur has an interesting history, with many of the Royal family holidaying here throughout the years. In the late 19th Century, the railway link to the French Riviera was completed, which allowed the region to become accessible to tourists. From then on this was the major factor in allowing British and foreign tourists to visit the area, in particular the rich and famous. The French Riviera not long after became a popular destination for Royalty. Queen Victoria was the most notable admirer of the region. In the late 19th Century, her majesty spent many holidays along with a large entourage to many resorts, including Menton, Grasse, Hyeres, and Cimiez. Other Royalty that were keen admirers of the region included the Prince of Wales, Alexander II of Russia, Napoleon III and Leopold II of Belgium.
The Cote d’Azur is home to a number of beautiful white sandy beaches, perfect for spending the days soaking up the sun and swimming in the sparkling blue waters. Inland, there is a fantastic countryside to be explored, by walking, cycling or horse riding. Shopping lovers will adore The Cote d’Azur; with so many designer brands, boutiques and individualist shops available, you will be spoilt for choice. With such a strong artistic background, The Cote d’Azur is home to a number of galleries housing some world famous artwork.
