Campania Holiday & Travel Guide

Campania is located in southern Italy facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is broken down into five provinces: Avellino, Benevento, Caserta, Naples and Salerno, each with its own set of cities and towns, the capital city in each being the one the province is named after. However, the regional capital city here is Naples.

Campania is an area rich in culture and history which can be explored in its art, music, museums, architecture and gastronomy. Campania roughly translates as “fertile countryside”, and so you can expect the region to have a strong natural environment which includes the Amalfi coast and the Sorrento Peninsula. Other stunning natural sites included the Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri.

A lot of it is locally sourced, such as the seafood, buffalo mozzarella cheese and the fruits such as lemons and oranges. It is a cliché, but you can’t go to Italy and not try the pizza, which is guaranteed to make UK versions of this original Neapolitan dish pale in comparison. Another popular dish all over the world is Neapolitan ice-cream, which also should be tasted from the country it originates. For wine tasters, Campania has several to sample, although the local alcoholic drink is Limoncello.

The coastline here makes it an ideal holiday for those looking for beach holidays. However, Campania is a haven for those who prefer a holiday centred on the arts and culture. Naples has several art pieces in its archaeological museum.  There is also an opera theatre in the town of San Carlo. Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum are also great places to visit to explore the history of the area.

Weather
The climate here is typical of the Mediterranean along the coastal areas, with high temperatures in the spring and summer. Winters don’t see the temperature drop dramatically, but rather greyer and wetter days. The average temperature is 16.6 °C (62 °F), which can reach highs of 29°C during the summer and lows of 6°C in November and December.

Transport
To reach Campania, the principal airport that airlines serve is the one in Naples. Easyjet and Britannia Direct both offer flights to and from the UK. It is also a region easy to reach from within Italy, its popular coastline reachable from Rome by train, ferry or motorway.

Campania is a large and vast area, so check out the travel guide for cities and towns listed for more information on them.
