British weather does not deter tourists who still flock to the UK

Grey, wet and unpredictable are words you can associate with British weather that sees 838 millimetres of rainfall a year. Yet tourists still flock to the UK who don’t let the weather put them off experiencing British culture.

In a survey carried out by VisitBritain, 1000 people were asked if the preconception of British weather would discourage them from visiting England. However, the majority of people said it would not.

The potential tourists from thirty different countries were asked how much they would agree with the following statement: “I would not want to visit Britain because of the weather there.” On a scale of one to seven (seven being they strongly agree with the statement) the average vote was 2.76.*

It seems that popular activities that tourists undergo while in the UK, such as visiting historical landmarks, museums, art galleries and local pubs, are not affected by the weather.

VisitBritain’s Chief Executive Sandie Dawe commented: “Our research also tells us that visitors from overseas come here to experience our world-class heritage and culture, be this Tate Liverpool, Edinburgh Castle, the British Museum or Stonehenge.”
