Braga

The oldest city in Portugal, and one of the oldest cities in the world, Braga is a real highlight of any visit to Portugal, packing in a range of historic buildings and monuments and the best of modern attractions such as sports stadiums and art galleries. Braga is the most populous city in the country after Porto and Lisbon, and you will never be short of things to do during your visit. The city centre boasts the bulk of its historic attractions, such as the Holy Cross Church, Saint Paul Church and the Renaissance-style Misericordia Church.

Notable museums to visit include the Cathedral Treasure Museum, the Pius XII Museum and the Museum Medina, as well as the intriguing Image Museum and the Biscainhos Museum. Other notable places to visit are the nearby Coimbras Chapel, the baroque-style New City Gate, the rococo Raio Palace, and the famous Circus Theatre.

Transport

There are numerous ways to get around in Braga, including buses and trains. The nearest airport is conveniently located at Palmeira, north of the city centre.

Food and drink

If you get hungry during your stay in Braga, you can visit some of its outstanding restaurants, serving the best of Portuguese and international cuisine.  Taperia Palatu serves up lovely Spanish tapas and classic Portuguese dishes; Adega Lusitana serves such delicious courses as wild boar and bacalhau, and Cafe Astoria serves a wide array of dishes such as salads, pasta, seafood and various grilled meats.
