Rhone-Alpes is located in the South East of France, bordering Provence, Italy and Switzerland. With an area of around 43,000 km it boasts a number of cities, towns and villages offering a vast range of activities to suit everyone. In the mountainous areas, hearty food is common including meat and cheese fondues and Raclette. In the valleys, much of the local produce is used in the recipies, including olives, walnuts and chestnuts. There are also many delicious cheeses made in the regions.
The weather in Rhone-Alpes is ideal for wine growing, with a gentle mix of sunshine and rain. Some of the most well known wines produced in the region are; Chardonany, Pinot Noir, Grenache and Chateaux-Neuf-de-Pape.
The region sees a perfect climate for visits all year round and due to the mountainous landscape can experience many differences across the region, with hot summers, averaging to 20°c and winters perfect for skiing at an average of 3°c. The climate allows for the summer months to be spent enjoying the national parks on offer, boasting beautiful lakes, mountains and vineyards. The winter months can be spent on the Alps enjoying the perfect conditions for skiing and snowboarding.
Travelling to Rhone-Alpes is very easy as, within the region there are two international airports - Bron International Airport in Lyon and Grenoble Isère International Airport in Grenoble. Many airlines fly to these including budget airlines offering cheap options to travel to the region.
Transport within Rhone-Alpes is highly accessible and most of the main towns are linked with the TGV (high speed train). The TGV also offers a link to the Capital City of Paris, in around 2 hours. Rhone-Alpes also has an extensive motorway network and with many car hire options, it is gives ease of access around the area.
